The Characters

Dan

Dan lives at Summerton Mill. He’s kind, responsible and practical, and he’s very in touch with the countryside that surrounds him, always careful not to disturb wildlife or damage the environment. He never kills spiders and feels sad when he finds a dead animal. He’ll do anything for one of Mrs Naybhur’s fruit cakes, and for a parsnip sandwich.

Mrs Naybhur

Mrs Naybhur is married to Dr Naybhur, and they live a little way up the track. She's a writer and is also very much into home baking and gardening. She makes the best cup of tea in Summerton valley. She's writing a country diary and is also compiling a country cookery book.

Dr Naybhur

Dr Naybhur enjoys a brisk walk and is a keen gardener. He is also a natural entertainer, and his acoustic guitar comes out when he begins to 'feel a song coming'.

Fluffa

Fluffa is Dan’s ever-faithful companion. He's always there, sniffing and snorting and scratching and fetching and chewing. He always has an emergency bone buried in a safe place nearby.

 Mousey-Tongue

Mousey-Tongue is a very lazy cat who is always lying asleep in the sun.

Francoise

Francoise is a Montbelliard cow. She moos with a French accent.

The Chickens

The chickens are free range ‘Yellow Spinners’. They spend all day spinning, rolling and scratching around Summerton Mill, providing Dan and his friends with a good supply of their spectacular canary-yellow eggs. They have an unusually active involvement in life around Summerton Mill.

Millfreaks

Small furry millfreaks can often be seen scampering around Summerton valley, and diving in and out of millfreak burrows. Visually, a cross between a rabbit and a hedgehog, the millfreak is relatively shy but fiercely territorial.

The oocuck lives in the oocuck sundial. Its flightless life is spent waiting for the right moment to herald the beginning of the end. When it oocucks twice, the end of the current turning is nigh.

And, not to be forgotten, Bird can sometimes be spotted by sharp-sighted twitchers.
